"I pick things up and put things down"

Hi there Beautiful People!

I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weekend. I got up and went to the gym this morning.  First I had to sign up for a membership.  I haven't had an actual membership in quite a while.  I have been making do with the track, mall, and fitness centers at my parents' places.  It's worked, but if I want to be prepared for the next Half Marathon I cannot slack off this winter. I have been pretty good about getting out to walk at lunch even in the cold, but if it gets bitter cold I will not be able to do it.

So I joined Planet Fitness.  It's the one I had been considering for a while, but of course sponsoring The Biggest Loser did help.   There are lots of things I like about it, and a few that I don't.

First let me say that I had been trying to figure out which location to join.  This has been my "excuse" that kept me from joining.  There are two within fifteen minutes of my apartment. One is convenient on my way home from work and one for my weekends.  One is in a shopping center with no fast food and one shares a parking lot with Five Guys.

I opted for the one that is closer for weekends because I am hoping that my pal Kelly will be going with me and that's better for her.  Sadly, it's also the one with the Five Guys in the parking lot :-(  I did get the membership that allows me to use other sites though so that's good.

Okay, so what do I like about Planet Fitness?  The rows and rows of cardio machines.  It's like my mecca.  Because there are so many I can feel free to stay on for a long time.  No "30 minute" rules.  I like the options for tvs.  There are 18 tvs that are preset.  Naturally there are the usual: ESPN, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, TBS, COMCAST, ESPN2.  There is also Lifetime.  That made me smile.  I happen to love the other channels, but I know that there are plenty of women who don't.  So that was nice.  There are a lot of weight machines to choose from.  The motto is "Judgement Free Zone".  There is no judging.  They have a "Lunkinator" alarm that will go off if someone slams down their weights or grunts loudly "I pick things up and put things down"...haha love that commercial.  This I like a lot.  Meatheads at the gym annoy me.

So what don't I like?  Well the first monday of every month is Pizza night.  Um...argh.  Need I even say anything about this?  There is also a bagel Tuesday.  I will just have to make that night Belly dancing night.  Speaking of belly dancing, there are no classes.  I'm okay with that, but it's a nice option to have.

So now I have my like it/don't like it stuff. At my last gym I didn't like having the trainers target me to sign up for training sessions.  I know it was their job, but A) I did not have the money for it and B) I always felt like a big lump of nothing when they approached me.  There is something to be said about that though.  I watched a bunch of people just really going through the motions.  They weren't really pushing themselves.  I also saw people using machines wrong.  They could actually hurt themselves if they aren't careful.  PF does offer a trainer for free, but he's not walking around monitoring to make sure people are using things properly.

For me though it's a good fit.  I can use it when I travel.  I can use the treadmill whenever I want.  I can go and watch the Biggest Loser while I'm there (the fitness center at my apartment complex had 3 tvs-ESPN, CNN, and the Weather Channel...Um...it was sucky when there wasn't a good game on).

My favorite part of the day was when I got a text from my pal Lety, who is training to do the DC half with me in March.  Today was her first day of homework.  I wanted her to walk for 2 hours.  And she did.  She texted me and told me she did 8 miles in two hours.  I got the text at the end of 5 miles.  I was just getting ready to call it quits at 6 miles and hit the weights.   Instead I stayed on for 8 miles.  I am hurting for it now, but it's a good hurt.  So tomorrow I will do 5 miles and weights.

My plan for today was to head over to Starbucks after for lunch and a little reading.  HAHAHAHA Um no.  I was so sweaty and gross that I feared being thrown out of the Bucks. So I came home for a shower.  Sadly, there was no going back out for the rest of the day. My legs are tight.  I was productive though and crossed a bunch of stuff off of my to do list.  So it was a good day.  Plus, Syracuse won :-)

So please note that I am in no way trying to get you to sign up with Planet Fitness.  If you choose a gym it has to be a good fit for you.  Just don't go sign up for anyone.  Do your homework first.  The reality is that there is another gym that I would have loved to have joined.  I just don't have the money for it and the classes that I would be interested in taking do not fit my schedule :-(  This is a good fit for Me right now.

  1. I've never heard of Planet Fitness (we must not have them in Michigan) but it sounds like a great gym.

  2. Hi! My friend just joined Plantet Fitness and is very happy with it.

I joined a different gym and my year membership will be over in July. I am going to look into PF went it closer to the end date. I love my gym but the prices are a bit steep.

That is great that you can use a trainer when you want one for free. I seem to do much better with my trainer then alone.

I live 2 minutes away from my gym (which is part of the reason I joined) - and I still have motivational issues to get there on the days I don't get to train. I am going to force myself to get there more often. With in 15 minutes of being on that treadmill, I stop dreading it and get into it. Having great music helps!

    Keep up the great work!!

    1. SO far I'm really enjoying it and the price is right :-)

It's amazing the power of the brain. I KNOW that I want and can workout, but my brain does a heck of a job trying to talk me out of it most days. :-( Luckily I'm getting good at not listening. haha.

Music does help. I couldn't live without my playlist.
